Holiday Movies – Some of My Favorites

Here is my list of holiday movies that I watch during this time of year. They are not all about Christmas, but they are my go to’s during this joyful season.  Why? Because they are uplifting, feel-good movies. Heart pulling at times, yet some of my favorites. You can find these holiday movies on Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, plus many more of the streaming channels available today. If you are lucky and if you still have a DVD player or VHS machine, you might have your own collection of holiday movies on hand; but if not, you can go to a Red Box and pick one up!

The Family Stone – Rom-Com

This holiday movie has a great cast with some of my favorite actors, such as Luke Wilson, Diane Keaton, Rachel McAdams, and Craig T. Nelson.  It’s about a woman named Meredith Morton, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, who is dating Everett Stone, played by Dermot Mulroney; they are on their first visit to meet his family during the Christmas holidays.  It has some twists and turns that will make you laugh as well as some jaw-dropping scenes and some scenes that will make you shed some tears. You may even feel like you have experienced some similar events at your holiday gatherings with family.  To me, it’s a fun one to watch with your adult family because there are some sensitive subjects in it.

You’ve Got Mail – Rom-Com

If you haven’t seen this movie, you need to… it’s a must in my book! It’s about the beginning of the internet when getting an email was exciting, especially if it was from the person you had a crush on! This movie takes place in NYC and is about a bookstore owner who is going out of business because the big box book store is coming!  It’s also about how two people with different outlooks on business come together. The movie stars some of the greats when it comes to comedy and romance…Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

While You Were Sleeping – Rom-Com

This movie is about a Chicago working girl who gets a holiday season greeting from a man whom she has a faraway crush on. By accident, she finds herself engaged to him, according to what some believe. I love the cast, which includes Sandra Bullock, Bill Pullen, and Peter Gallagher. Entertaining for sure!

Sleepless in Seattle – Rom-Com

In this one, a man loses his wife and a son loses his mom, and the only wish the son has is to find someone for his dad who will love him so that his dad won’t be so sad. I enjoy the way they all end up meeting at the same place that my husband and I had our first date… the Empire State Building in NYC. It’s magic!

The Holiday Rom-Com

This is one of my favorites for the holidays! I love the actors in this movie; Jack Black is just funny with his facial expressions alone. Kate Winslet is always sweet, and Cameron Diaz is fun to watch as she moves through the different characters she plays. Jude Law, well, he’s just like a big puppy dog in this flick. A total fun movie to watch during this time of year or any time of year frankly.

ELF – Family Comedy

This is probably one of my all-time favorite Christmas movies. Will Ferrell, who plays Buddy, is just a hoot! I enjoy Zooey Deschanel with her witty attitude, and I love the bathroom scene when they are singing together. It pulls on your heartstrings when Buddy’s dad (James Cann) disowns Buddy. Overall you will see many familiar faces playing in this fun holiday movie! Plus, you will probably start singing along with them at the end of the movie!

The Santa Claus – Comedy

It’s hard to believe this was made in 1994, but still, it’s one that I enjoy watching. Tim Allen stars as the toy salesman who turns into Santa. Of course, it has a love story, but mostly it’s about a son who falls in love with his dad and his new role. A great family movie!

Serendipity – Rom-Com

It’s all about destiny! An oldie but a goodie. Finding true love is hard enough, but if it’s destiny, then it’s bound to happen. A book is what brings the characters together in the end. Two actors who play in many rom-com movies, Jonathan – (John Cusack) meets Sara – (Kate Beckinsale) star in this movie.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles – Comedy

One of my husband’s favorite movies of all time! You can understand why this is a funny movie when two of the most comical actors are in it! Steve Martin and Jim Candy go on a journey to get back home for Thanksgiving. Get ready to laugh for an hour or more!

A Christmas Story – Classic Family Holiday Movie

I’m sure you have seen this one, if not turn on your TV; it’s on 24 hours a day on a few channels or pull it up on one of your streaming channels. You’ll see scenes that are familiar to you, as we saw scenes from our household, whether from your own childhood or a story in your now current family- soap in the mouth, tongue getting stuck on a light pole or your dog eating the turkey…. all have to do with our mouth, which brings us back to eating!  I am a travel and food blogger.

When Harry Meets Sally – Rom-Com –  It’s the 30th Anniversary of This Classic Film

I hope this is in the stack of movies you have seen, but, again, if not, it’s a classic Rom-Com you must see at least once. I dare to say you will be watching it again next year for one of your holiday movies and for years to come.  Sally, played by Meg Ryan, and Harry, played by Billy Crystal, along with a cameo of Rob Reiner who also directs this movie, are unforgettable! This film is written by screenwriter Nora Ephron, who has written many films, including You’ve Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle, Julie and Julia, Silkwood, Heartburn.

Whether we are watching holiday movies or any other movie, my family has a go-to snack. What is your go-to snack? And while you are telling me that, please share what your favorite holiday movie is!
